If you are like me fantasy football is a weekly ritual during the fall football season. Studying, creating lineups, talking junk to your friends, and hopefully unlike me you won some games. The Super Bowl ends the fantasy football season, however The Waste Management Open ushers in a new and equally entertaining season. The Fantasy Golf Season! Like fantasy football it really makes watching the tournaments exciting, because each week you have a stake in the tournament, whether its money, bragging rights, a humiliating bet between friends, or your first child’s name.
My roommate is the one who initially go me into fantasy golf. The concept is simple, each week you get a salary cap to pick 6 golfers you expect to do well, and it enters you into a contest versus thousands of people across the world. It has evolved from just my house, to being a weekly contest between the Coastal Golfaway staff, with Alvin currently leading the pack after picking Brandt Snedeker in his top 6 last week. This week the picks are in for the Northern Trust Open, and I am looking to start a comeback. I had to spurn local boy Dustin Johnson, but I am going with:
1. Jordan Spieth
2. Keegan Bradley
3. Hunter Mahan
4. Kevin Chappell
5. Kevin Na
6. Fred Couples
This restaurant and bar have been a staple in the Myrtle Beach area for over thirty years now. It has been a watering hole for Jerry’s group since the inception of “The Other Masters” 23 years ago. Rossi’s the restaurant prepares your standard Italian dishes while incorporating local seafood to add flair to its menu. Jerry’s favorite meal is the veal parmesan, and being from the densely populated areas of New York and New Jersey he can attest to its quality.
If you would like a little more low key dining experience step on over to Eighty-Eight’s Piano bar and try Johnny’s favorite, the Hot Antipasti Tray that feeds 3-4 people. It includes blackened beef tips, fried lobster, mussel’s marinara, fried soft shell crab, crab cakes, and fried calamari.
The bartenders also really know how to make you feel at home, countless times customers are amazed how year in, year out they remember names and their favorite drinks which make the experience really first class.
Not only do they provide you with quality food, and cocktails, they have a banquet area if you and your group would like to rent a room and truly have a special night out.

Here at Coastal Golfaway we will be starting our new course of the week segment, which will be highlighting our favorite courses of the Grand Strand. What better way to get this segment started than to talk about Rivers Edge in Shallote, North Carolina just a mere drive from the North Myrtle Beach area.
This Arnold Palmer design has been collecting accolades ever since its inception in 1999, while being ranked a Top 5 Public Golf Course in North Carolina by Golf Digest in 2010.The very first day that Arnold Palmer gazed out across the Shallotte River, he remarked that this site had the potential to be something very special. He assigned one of his top project managers, Erik Larsen, to the job and the result is sensational.
While at Rivers Edge, you can experience playing on the same grass on which the pros play. It is one of only two courses in the Myrtle Beach area that feature Paspalum grass greens. The 2012 PGA Championship was played on Paspalum Greens.
Six of the holes at Rivers Edge Golf Club sit high upon bluffs that overlook two miles of grassy marshlands bisected by the bends and turns of the Shallotte River. The interior holes at Rivers Edge are equally stunning with gentle elevation changes and freshwater lakes.
Not only is the scenery fantastic, but so are the prices. You can mix and match Rivers Edge with a variety of courses in our PGA 4 Package that will enable you to receive a $100 Gift Card. If you are really feeling up to it you can come and challenge Chase and Jerry in this years Father Son Classic in which Rivers Edge is a participating member.
While it may surprise you that the staff of Coastal Golfaway would head north while it is frozen up north. We are making a concerted effort to branch out and visit our customers, so all of our interactions aren’t over the phone or through email. We know many of you would rather be playing golf the next few Saturdays, but the weather is not permitting it. So we have a solution, you should come visit us at your local North Coast Golf Show, where you can learn more about golf travel, newly released clubs, and maybe get a lesson from David Leadbetter.
But the true value is that you can come and meet one of our Myrtle Beach Golf Specialist in person, the good ol fashioned way, where we can handcraft a Myrtle Beach Golf Package that will meet your needs and desires. Not to mention get you out of the snow and cold for a few days where you can finally hit the links again, and enjoy the great game of golf.
So yall should come see us in the big yellow booth, and if you’re in the D.C area this weekend, after the show we will be at TopGolf, if you feel like having a beer and talking some golf, I am sure Carl and Chase would love to chat!

“baby its cold outside” First things first, its a foregone conclusion that because its cold outside and you are wearing more clothes, you are not going to be able to hit the golf ball as far as you normally would, so always take “more club”.
Even though old man winter is in full force, it doesn’t mean that you should hang up your clubs for the entire winter. All it takes is a little more preparation, a small investment on some new apparel and of course…a lot of love for the game.
The experts say that most of our body heat is lost through our hands and our head. So in order to stay warm, we need to make sure that both are sufficiently covered. A nice beanie and a really good pair of winter golf gloves ought to do it.
A good way to keep your body warm is to wear layers, you may want to consider wearing 3 layers, a base layer, a mid layer and then finally the outer layer. This may sound bulky and awkward not to mention restricting but it works.
As with everything these days, there is a new variety of high-tech gear that is lighter and far less restricting. The material in this new fabric is designed to keep heat in and allow moisture out, resulting in maximum comfort and efficiency.
Remember, no matter how cold it is, you’re on the course with your mates and that means a fun and enjoyable time. One last thing, keep hydrated and by this I mean drink water, the “beverages” for after your round!
From the moment he laid eyes on the piece of land in front of him, the legendary Arnold Palmer exclaimed that it had the potential to be something very special. Aside from its stunning beauty, Rivers Edge has become one of the most spectacular golf courses that you’ll ever play.
Six holes at Rivers Edge sit high atop bluffs that overlook two miles of scenic marshlands, they give the impression that they have been carved out of the natural twists and turns of the tranquil Shallotte River. The interior holes are equally beautiful with subtle elevations, good bunkering and freshwater lakes.
A standout hole on the golf course is the 570 yard (back tees) par five ninth hole. This beauty is guarded by marsh down the entire left side of the fairway and marsh to carry on your approach to the narrow green which is bulkheaded into the marsh, it is a really good golf hole and features quite the challenge.
Rivers Edge features Paspalum grass greens which is a rarity in the area. This strain of grass is very resilient and the greens are always in great condition. Golf Magazine ranked Rivers Edge among “Top New Courses You Can Play” in 2000 and in 2008 and 2010 ranked it among “The Best Courses Near You.”
Azalea Sands Golf Club is proud to announce that they will feature 8 inch cups! Azalea Sands will be the first course on the Grand Strand to move to the bigger cups. This transition will mean lower scores, quicker rounds and of course loads more fun for the recreational golfer.
This new concept is being pushed by many leaders in the golf industry. The bigger cup is a great way for beginners to play at a faster pace and with more reward. Azalea Sands is a club that focuses on fun and what’s better than making more birdies and shooting lower scores.
According to statistics, millions of golfers have left the game over recent years, forcing golf course owners and operators to “think outside the box”. These “big cups” are almost twice the size of the standard cup and have been installed on all 18 holes and the practice putting green.
The bigger cup doesn’t look ridiculous at all and it will make it easier to hole putts that are within ten feet. If you tally up your the total putts per round, you’ll quickly see how this may help you trim a few strokes off your score.
Please let your golf specialist know if you would like to add Azalea Sands to your next golf package. I think that you will enjoy the experience and the fact that you will take a few strokes and some time off of your round.
