Barefoot Resort – The Dye Club
With a reputation for designing memorable and challenging golf courses, Pete Dye has definitely hit a “home run” with this one. Once you have played the Pete Dye course at Barefoot Resort in North Myrtle Beach, you will understand why so many of this legendary architect’s designs are used for PGA tournaments.
With dramatic “post card like” images, Dye has created a spectacular golf course that winds its way through the pure white sands of a Carolina Bay, this picturesque layout will leave your ears ringing with the many “oohs and aahs” from your playing partners.
However do not get too caught up with its beauty, because herein lies a beast. This North Myrtle Beach layout is vintage Dye at his best; tread carefully because he guides you to some mighty pitfalls and plenty of penal waste bunkering throughout his coastal masterpiece.
The fairways are wide with generous landing areas and are GN-1 Bermuda grass, a hybrid grass developed by Greg Norman Turf, approach areas are Tif-dwarf Bermuda grass while the fairly small and testy undulating greens are Champion UltraDwarf Bermuda.
Ranked in the “Top Ten” on the Myrtle Beach Grand Strand by Golf Digest, (2013 Myrtle Beach area and South Carolina state “Golf Course of the Year”) the 7343 yard par 72 golf course is the only semi-private facility at Barefoot Resort.
There are so many favorites on this golf course, but we have chosen to give you a snapshot of the eighteenth hole, a 415 yard par four from the championship tees that doglegs left with water down the entire left side of the hole, in fact very similar to the eighteenth at TPC Sawgrass. Off the tee, there is room to bale out on the right, however, this will leave a longer approach to a green that is guarded by a small pot bunker (front right) and water on the left and behind the fairly small green.
Do not despair because Dye has provided a small collection area behind the green for those “overcooked” approaches. One of North Myrtle Beaches more impressive but challenging finishing holes that will cause much mumbling amongst your foursome, leave here with a par and you will feel somewhat vindicated.
Offering five sets of tees to choose from, with each providing a fair but challenging test of golf, the Tournament tees (Platinum) measure 7343 yards, the Championship tees (Black Tees) measure 6634 yards, the Member tees measure (White) 6005 yards the Green tees measure 5504 yards and the Forward tees (Gold) measure 5021 yards respectively and if played from the appropriate tees, golfers of all abilities will be treated to an unforgettable round of golf….. ENJOY!!!
